A group of seafarers arrived in Sri Lanka on June 22 by charter plane from India. 29 of them, out of which 23 are Indians who were to sign in from SL and 6 Sri Lankans who signed off in India have tested positive for COVID-19. The reports of another 5 seafarers have come inconclusive.
The seafarers with confirmed reports have been taken to a special COVID-19 treatment hospital. They are kept in isolation with regular health monitoring.
Following the incident, the Sri Lankan government has decided to temporarily suspend Sign On/Off operations for foreigners in the country. They are presently focused on getting back Sri Lankan seafarers with immediate effect.
Sri Lanka has also asked responsible firms to cancel impending air movements even though they were earlier approved.
