As per religious texts, the significance of the festival can be dated back to the times of Mahabharata. It is believed that a dog accompanied Dharmraj Yudhisthir to heaven. Another legend suggests that Samara, the mother of dogs helped Lord Indra to retrieve his lost cattle. Hence, dogs are considered sacred in Hinduism.
