A 400-year-old banyan tree located in Bhose village in Sangli district of Maharashtra was going to be uprooted. The tree that spreads over 400 sq metres in front of the Yallama Devi temple comes in the area of expansion of a highway on the Ratnagiri-Kolhapur-Miraj-Solapur Expressway in Maharashtra.
Villagers protested against the decision and appealed to Maharashtra’s Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray to save the tree. Accordingly, Thackeray wrote to Nitin Gadkari and appealed to carry out the highway expansion without harming the centuries-old tree.
The combined effort of the villagers and Thackeray worked and the uprooting of the tree has been stalled. They are reportedly looking for another alternative for highway expansion.
